WFMW: Two Easy Steps

Today’s WFMW Tip comes just in time for Earth Day, which was Sunday. In honor of the efforts many are taking to save the planet, I have two tips that work for me!

Cotton Towels:
Instead of using gobs and gobs of paper towels, we have a drawer in our kitchen that is devoted to storing cotton towels. The drawer is right near where we keep the paper towels, so they are just as convenient to grab. Often, I already have one on the counter! When I am done with one towel, I just toss it in the washer, assuming that I don’t already have a load going. (My laundry room is adjacent to the kitchen, so it’s really easy.) We do this instead of using paper towels because it is better for our environment. While you can buy “recycled paper” paper towels, I still find that it is easier to use my cotton towels. I am even planning on demoting some burpies to kitchen duty in the near future. They work really well also!

CFL Bulbs:

I know that I have posted about this before, but I feel very strongly about CFL Bulbs. They are so much better for the environment.

Exactly how much better are they, you ask?

Well….if every one of 110 million American households used just one CFL bulb, the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people. That’s the size of Delaware and Rhode Island. One bulb is equivalent to taking 1.3 million cars off the roads.

So I continue my challenge. Please change at least one of your most used bulbs to a CFL bulb. You have seen them. They look like Ice Cream Cones. Your kids will love them for that reason alone! You will love them because they are cheaper in the long run, even though they are a little more of an investment up front. They are more efficient, that’s the bottom line. We now have a whole house full of these great energy-saving bulbs. I must confess, I feel better about turning on the lights! Let me know if you did it. I would love to hear.

These two things work for me. What works for you?

  1. We are in the process of converting to the CFL bulbs…I love them!

  2. I just changed my kitchen and daughter’s bedroom to the cfl bulbs. I’m not a huge fan of the color of the lighting (kind of yellowish), but I will put up with it because I know that it is a good cause. I will only be buying CFLs from now on. It is worth the extra cost.

Btw, adorable baby on the right!! So cute!!

  3. Hey! We did this. Well, we actually started with two bulbs about three years ago, but this earth day we changed *all* the bulbs in the house to compact fluorescents! AND we signed up for windpower from our electric company! We already were a one car family, and we do the cotton towels thing too. I use gauze weave diapers for cleaning the floor, and tea towels for drying, draining, etc. Thanks for the cool post.
